So why was this such a milestone event??

There had been a controversy over training and coaching methods. Geoff Gleeson was in one faction and he believed that traditional judo based on Japanese ideas was not the way forward. He advocated a Western approach at his base in the Midlands. The contrary view was held by the Budokwai and the teams challenged each other to sort out which method was best. The Budokwai thrashed the Midlands and thus endorsed the value of traditional Japanese Judo.
